The boy sat on the rock and absent-mindedly dipped his foot into the sea as it lapped around the hard stone. Satisfied that the water was warm enough, he pulled off the rest of his clothes, with the exception of his shorts and slipped into the water. It was always the same. His foot had lied yet again and as he sucked the air into his lungs before going under, his body was baptised with a thousand icy needles from the mighty Atlantic.
Now that the days were getting longer in Eriskay David could stay in the water for at least ten minutes before his core temperature dropped so low that hypothermia threatened to take over. His blue eyes opened under the water like those of a new born babe and the feeling of freedom that he felt every time he entered his own surreal world of filtered sunlight overwhelmed him. This was where he came alive, where there were no faces to stare, no need to pretend, no one to make him feel less than perfect. This was home…
