Full Fathom Five

by Mike Wilson

Genre: General Fiction

Full Fathom Five is a novel of courage and sacrifice with Victorian lifeboatmen on the Yorkshire coast. The story has a background of events which actually happened between 1871 and 1898 in Bridlington. The Great Gale of 1871 led to the deaths of six lifeboatmen and life-saving services in the town changed for ever. Kit Brown, the main character, shows us his life as a fisherman, his dealings within his family, colleagues and friends. There is humour occasionally but the hard lives of Victorian fishermen is well expressed. Kit’s adventures include winning silver medals for heroism, and being instrumental in the changes wrought by the Gale, until his death in 1898 when he died saving others in peril from the sea.
